Ernesto Zengotita Yambo (b. 1970, San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a multidisciplinary artist who integrates ceramics, sculpture, illustration, and visual storytelling. His work explores the intersections of imagination, spirituality, identity, and the human condition. It reveals poetic narratives in which the ordinary and the extraordinary coexist.
Zengotita studied Fine Arts and Humanities at the University of Puerto Rico, where he received formal training in painting, sculpture, printmaking, and ceramics under the mentorship of some of Puerto Rico’s most distinguished artists and educators. He served for ten years in administrative and educational roles at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico under the direction of its founder and then Executive Director, Dr. María E. Somoza and Marianne Ramirez Aponte, the current Executive Director. He later served as Art Director at MUSA Comunicación Creativa, a creative agency founded and directed by his lifelong friend and kindred spirit Ricardo Aviles. During his five years there, he integrated his artistic practice with visual communication and brand identity.
After stepping away from the art world for several years, Zengotita returned to his artistic practice at the age of fifty. He continued his ceramic education at Glaze Ceramic Studio in Dallas, Texas, under the guidance of contemporary ceramic artist Adam Knoche. He also pursued further studies at the internationally renowned Scuola Internazionale di Ceramica La Meridiana in Tuscany, Italy.
At the heart of Zengotita’s work is the male figure, celebrated as a symbol of harmony, strength, vulnerability, and love, while exploring themes of belonging, rejection, healing, and personal transformation. Through organic forms and symbolic imagery, his work reflects on the emotional wounds caused by bullying, shame, fear, and social exclusion, proposing compassion, resilience, and authenticity as quiet acts of resistance.
Nature also occupies an essential place within his artistic practice. Trees, leaves, birds, flowers, and other organic forms establish a continuous dialogue between humanity and the natural world, reminding us that both share the same cycles of fragility, transformation, renewal, and hope.
He is currently developing the Walking Closet series, in which the closet becomes both a personal and universal metaphor. Born from the lived experience of a gay man who feels he carries his closet wherever he goes—a “walking closet”—the series transcends LGBTQ+ identity to represent the invisible burdens we all carry: the fears we silence, the pain we conceal, the desires we repress, and the truths we are still hesitant to reveal. In Zengotita’s work, the closet ceases to be a place of confinement and becomes a space of vulnerability, self-acceptance, and liberation.
Through a visual language that combines artistry, sculptural language, symbolism, and profound introspection, Ernesto Zengotita Yambo invites viewers to look inward. His work proposes that imagination, nature, and creativity possess the power to heal, reconcile, and reveal the profound beauty of human expression through art.
